Statement from the Association of Pakistani Physicians and Surgeons UK (APPSUK) Regarding Health and Human Rights Concerns

We, at APPSUK, express our grave concern regarding recent reports on the health of former Prime Minister Imran Khan during his detention. Publicly available information suggests that he has suffered from central retinal vein occlusion - a serious vascular condition that, without urgent and appropriate treatment in a fully equipped hospital, may result in permanent loss of vision. His family and legal representatives have raised alarms over restricted access to medical care, insufficient transparency, and limitations on family visits.

As medical professionals, our concern is grounded in our ethical obligation to uphold humane treatment, timely and adequate medical care, and the protection of fundamental human rights. Unimpeded access to independent medical assessment, continuity of treatment, and regular contact with immediate family and legal counsel are universally recognised standards of care.

We respectfully call upon the Government of Pakistan and the relevant authorities to ensure transparent, evidence-based medical management for Mr. Khan, permit access to physicians of his choosing (including a retina specialist ophthalmologist), and safeguard his basic human rights, including family visitation. Adherence to these principles reinforces public confidence in state institutions and affirms Pakistan’s constitutional and international obligations
