Advancing Health, Changing Lives

> Heavy floods in Pakistan have led to many people losing their lives, livelihood and homes. Several villages have been completely destroyed. Our brothers and sisters in Pakistan are in urgent need of food, drinking water and shelter. We would like to encourage you all to support the needy by donating generously. Donations can be made online to Islamic Relief via this link.

> We are now sending medical teams to the flood affected areas. If you are able to volunteer your time and services for 1 or 2 weeks, please send us an email.

> Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) has announced free airlift of relief goods through its domestic & international network. Further details on how you can help is given on this website: www.piac.com.pk/Flood_Relief/index.htmhere

> Medical Aid to Pakistan charity fundraising dinner is being held at the Millennium Gloucester Hotel, Kensington, London on Saturday 18th September. > The National Clinical Assessment Service (NCAS) has published a report recently on the concerns about the performance of doctors. It contains details of the cases they dealt with during the last 8 years. To read full report please click here.

> We have published Health Advice for visitors to Pakistan. You can download the brochure from this link. These brochures are available in the UK from PIA offices, travel agents and all Consulates of Pakistan.

> The Association of Pakistani Physicians and Surgeons is aspiring to ‘Modernise the Health System of Pakistan’. We believe fundamental changes are urgently needed to rescue the health sector. If you are able to provide any logistic support, funding or have evidence based practical suggestions please do write to us. Please read our summary proposal here.

> Diarrhoea is rated as the number one killer in Pakistan resulting in the death of 700-900 children per day. We are currently working on our first Water Project which is being set-up in village number 304-GB near Toba Tek Singh. Read about our proposal for Clean Water Supply Projects in Pakistan here.

> NICE: We would like to introduce all our members in Pakistan to NICE (National Institute of Health and Clinical Excellence), an independent organisation in the UK responsible for providing evidence based clinical guidelines on the promotion of good health and the treatment of diseases. To find out more about the guidelines it has published or is in the process of developing please visit: www.nice.org.uk

> According to new General Medical Council (GMC) guidelines doctors must not allow their personal beliefs to compromise patient care. The guidance explores how doctors should deal with a range of dilemmas including abortion, the wearing of face-veils and male circumcision. For full details please visit this link.

> As you are aware certain areas of Britain have been subject to torrential rain and extreme weather conditions over the last 24 hours. In these circumstances The Association of Pakistani physicians & Surgeons is offering support to any of its members who may have been affected. Likewise, if anyone can provide assistance in terms of temporary accommodation or other support please let us know.

> We are collecting medicines and medical equipment i.e. surgical instruments, unused suture material, dressings, gloves, catheters, BP apparatus, stethoscopes, ECG machines, defibrillators etc. As you are aware many supplies are wasted here in order to comply with strict European regulations. However these supplies could be used to save many lives in third world. We do not accept medicines with an expiry date of less than 12 months. Please also note that all equipment should be in working order. May you get best reward for your efforts!

> The Association has started its health promotion campaign in Pakistan as well. This will include talks conducted by APPS members whilst visiting the country (updating on latest research, trends and protocols). The target audience will be doctors, GPs, medical students and the public. If any of our members are willing to give a talk during his / her visit please let us know in advance so that appropriate arrangement can be made. A mutually convenient date and venue can be chosen.
